About CadCraft

CadCraft — 2D drafting

Start drawing

  • Type L and press Enter for a line. Click points, or type @100,0; press Enter to finish.
  • C circle, REC rectangle, TR trim, O offset. Type HELP for every command.
  • Wheel to zoom; drag with the wheel or the right button to pan. A right click is Enter.
  • DLI dimensions, B makes a block. The + under the drawing makes a sheet with a title block; Ctrl+P plots to PDF.
  • Or drop a DWG or DXF here. It opens on this computer; nothing is uploaded.

    CadCraft settings

These settings are only for CadCraft, and you can change them only here, in the app.

    Cursor

The crosshair and pick box in the drawing. A bigger pick box also picks objects from a little farther away.

    Paste point

Where a pasted copy hangs from the cursor (Ctrl+V) until you click: the lower-left corner of the copy's extents, or its center. Copy with a base point (COPYBASE) and that point is used instead.

    Clicking objects

With no command running. Adds: each click or window adds to what is selected, and Shift takes objects out. Replaces: a click or window selects only what it picks, and Shift adds to the selection (Shift+click a selected object to take it out).

    Clicking an empty spot

With no command running, a click where there is no object starts a selection window. It can also clear what is selected (hold Shift to keep it), or keep the selection, as other drafting programs do: then Esc clears it.

    Dragging to select

Press and drag on an empty spot. Lasso draws a freehand outline: drag to the right to select what lies wholly inside it, to the left for what it touches, and press Space while dragging to switch between window, crossing and fence. Rectangle draws a box instead. A click, then a second click, always draws a box. Same as LASSOMODE 1 or 0.

    Dragging to trim and extend

In TRIM and EXTEND, pressing on an empty spot and dragging draws a freehand path (it trims every piece it crosses), or a window (it trims every piece it touches, as the C option does).

Length and area of the selection

With objects selected, the status bar shows their total length and the total area of the closed ones. Properties always shows them for several objects.

    Drawing autocomplete

With no command running, a grey ghost shows what your drawing's own patterns say comes next (the next stud, the next stair step, the missing wall). In the middle of LINE or PLINE it shows the next point (the next step of a stair, the fourth corner of a rectangle, the closing point). Tab takes it, Esc dismisses it. Worked out on this computer from the newest objects, by rules, with no model.

    Merge-friendly files

Each object you draw gets a short key that never changes, saved in the DWG or DXF. Git, Fossil or Mercurial can then merge two people's edits of one drawing object by object (cadcraft merge, docs/FILE-FORMATS.md). Costs about 10 percent in file size; turn it off if you never merge.

    Offer my firm's details

When what you select matches a detail in your firm's library (DETAILS), a line in the status bar says so. Matched on this computer by words, with no model.

    Corner indicator

Automatic shows the axis icon on the Model tab and the view cube on the 3D tab; the other choices apply to both. The axis icon is the X and Y marker at the bottom left of the Model tab (X, Y and Z on the 3D tab). The view cube sits at the top right: on the Model tab it shows the drawing from the top, and clicking another face, edge or corner opens the 3D tab looking from there; on the 3D tab it turns with the view. Sheets show neither.

    Sheet tabs

With many sheets, show only each sheet's number on its tab (from the sheet set, or the start of its name, like A-101). Hover a tab for its whole name.

    Toolbar rows

How many lines the tools use above the drawing. Wrap to fit follows the window width; 2 rows keeps two lines and scrolls sideways when they do not fit; 1 row keeps the most room for the drawing. Shift+Ctrl+F1 steps through them. What the buttons show (icons, text or both) is in General › Toolbar, and Ctrl+F1 steps through it.

    First-drawing tour

Six short steps that draw, move, trim, erase and measure something. It starts by itself only the first time.

Settings › Global › First-time tours turns this off for every app.

    Toolbar position

Which side of the window the toolbar sits on. Top is how it has always been. A ribbon menu style is made for the top or the bottom; the CadCraft toolbar and the classic style also fit the sides. Reset the layout (Settings › General) puts it back on top. On a phone the toolbar stays where the phone layout puts it.

    Layout

    Workspace

Every app that has the workspace you pick opens in it; the others keep their toolbar and panels. Your toolbar style, menus and keys stay as they are.

Work environments. Save your whole setup under a name (the layout, menu style and keys, toolbar, panels and My tools, for every app) and switch between setups. The theme and the language stay as they are.

Lost a toolbar, a menu or a panel?

Puts the toolbar (order, lock and buttons), the panels, the screen mode and the menu style back to how CadCraft starts. Your theme, language, sizes and CadCraft's own settings stay as they are.

    Theme

The theme applies to every CadCraft app and the site.

    Language

The language applies to every CadCraft app. The app reloads to change it.

    Units

Global settings: each app can have its own measurement settings and defaults too.

Switch a unit on to see it in the unit lists. The star marks the default for new drawings, measures and items. These choices are the same in every app in this browser.

    Loading the units…

A file keeps its own unit (a drawing's units, a project's feet or meters), and that unit stays in its list even when it is turned off here.

    Hardware specs

Sharing your hardware specs allows us to build more efficient engines. The information is aggregated and not associated with your account: the graphics card, processor cores, memory and screen size, the browser and system family, and the app — no files, no name, no address.

    First-time tours

Off: no app starts its tour by itself. Each app's own settings can still turn its tour off, or take it again.

    Screen

Browsers allow full screen only after a click or key press, so it starts on your first click in the drawing.

    Toolbar

    Toolbar rows

Wrap shows every group. 2 rows and 1 row keep the drawing taller; scroll the toolbar sideways for the rest.

Arrange: drag tools within their group, and drag a group by its name.

Right-click the toolbar (or long-press it) for Arrange, Lock and Reset.

    Sizes and panels

The bars, toolbars, panels and dialogs of CadCraft, bigger or smaller; the drawing keeps its own zoom. Panel text size works on top of it.

Compact tightens the row heights, panel padding, toolbar buttons and panel text of CadCraft, so more fits on the screen. A touch screen keeps its large targets either way.

You can also drag a panel's inner edge. Double-click the edge to put it back.

    Panels

Drag a panel by its name to dock it left, right or at the bottom, or drop it over the drawing to float it. A new window can go on your other screen. Reset layout puts every panel back where it started.
