Questions and answers
The short version: nothing has shipped yet, every app will be free and open source, and your drawings stay in open formats on your own machine. The details are below. If your question is not here, ask us on the support page.
The basics
Is CadCraft the app or the company?
Both. CadCraft is the name of the whole family of eight apps, and also of its 2D drafting app, the one most people will open first. When we mean the drafting app on its own, we say "the CadCraft app".
Is CadCraft a clone of AutoCAD?
No. CadCraft is an independent family of tools written from scratch. The CadCraft drafting app is designed so that if you draft in AutoCAD, the command line, aliases and layer workflow will feel familiar, but it shares no code, artwork or branding with any Autodesk product.
Is it free?
Yes. Every app and every feature is free in Community, on the desktop and in the browser, for any work, paid work included. A commercial license adds the cloud: cloud saving in the browser, sync between browser and desktop, and version history. Exporting a copy to your own computer is always free, with or without a license.
When can I use it?
Not yet. Nothing has shipped. The CadCraft drafting app comes first: its core is in development now, and its alpha will be the first public build. Join early access and we will email you when there is something to download.
Can I use it for commercial work?
Yes, in Community, for free: the open-source license allows commercial use, and every app and feature is included. A commercial license runs the same apps and adds the cloud: cloud saving in the browser, sync between browser and desktop, and version history. It is $25 a month for one app, $20 a month each for two or more, and two months free when you pay yearly. If CadCraft earns you money, it is also how you help pay for it.
Is CadCraft affiliated with Autodesk, Trimble or the other vendors you mention?
No. CadCraft is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Autodesk, Trimble, Bluebeam, ConstructConnect or Dassault Systèmes. We name their products only to say what our apps will feel familiar to; the names belong to their owners.
How will I hear about the first build?
Join early access and confirm your email. You will get one message when a build is ready for your platform, plus the occasional progress note. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Files and formats
Will it open my DWG files?
That is the point. The CadCraft app opens and saves DWG and DXF, and reading DWG is part of the work underway now. Before you trust a live project to it, we will publish what round-trips cleanly and what does not, build by build.
What about Revit files (.rvt)?
RVT is a proprietary format with no public specification, so we will not promise to open it. BimCraft targets IFC 4, the open BIM standard that Revit and most other BIM tools export. Exporting IFC from your current tool is the way in.
Will it open my SketchUp files?
Not directly. SKP is a proprietary format, so ModelCraft targets open ones instead: glTF, OBJ, STL, DAE and IFC. SketchUp can export several of those, which is the way to bring existing models across.
Do my files leave my machine?
Not from the desktop apps: they work offline on local files and send nothing. In the browser apps, drawings you choose to save will be stored with the cloud saving a commercial license includes, encrypted on Backblaze B2 and private to your account. You can always export a copy to your own computer instead.
Can I save drawings in the browser version?
Yes, with a commercial license, which includes cloud saving. Without one, the browser apps still let you open, draw and export a copy to your own computer as DWG, DXF or PDF, for free. The desktop apps save to local files and never need it.
Where are cloud drawings stored?
Cloud saving comes with a commercial license, and the drawings will be stored on Backblaze B2, encrypted at rest and in transit, and private to your account. You will be able to export or delete them at any time. Exporting a copy is free for everyone, and the desktop apps never need cloud storage.
Will my CAD standards and templates carry over?
That is the plan. The CadCraft app reads layers, linetypes, text styles, dimension styles and blocks from DWG and DXF templates, so your office standard can come with you.
Platforms, license and agents
Which platforms will it run on?
Every app is planned as real desktop software for macOS, Windows and Linux. WebAssembly builds that run in the browser are planned for most apps; CivilCraft and DetailCraft start as desktop-only.
Will it run on my laptop?
That is the design target: 8 GB of RAM for every app, including BIM and civil models. The apps are native code with no browser engine bundled in, a model loads only what is on screen, and geometry is streamed from disk rather than held in memory. Nothing has shipped, so this is a target, not a measurement: we will publish measured memory use against a reference project with every build, and if we miss the target we will say so.
Is it open source? Under what license?
Yes. Each app's code goes public under a permissive license when its repository opens, and the exact license will be named in the repository before the first build.
What does scriptable to the command line mean?
Every app can be driven three ways besides the mouse and keyboard: a command-line interface, a JSON control channel and an MCP server. Scripts and AI agents can open a drawing, run commands, check it against your standards and plot it, and you decide what they are allowed to touch.
Getting involved
Can I contribute?
Yes, once the repositories open. Until then the most useful things you can do are join early access, tell us your role and the tools you use, and suggest what we should rebuild next.
How do I report a bug?
There is nothing to report against yet. When builds go out, use the support form with the topic set to Bug report. Once the repositories open you will be able to file issues there too.
Still have a question?
Write to us and a person will reply by email. If it is an idea for a tool, the suggestion list is the better place for it.
