Work in the toolbox and info box layout

Switch the app to a column of tools on the left with slots for your own, an info box across the top that follows the running tool or what you picked, a navigator on the right, a tab for every view, quick options and an edit palette, and switch back to the classic layout whenever you like.

Toolbox and info box is one of the app's three workspace layouts. The drawing tools stand in a column on the left, an info box across the top shows what the running tool needs or what you have selected, every view has a tab, and a quick bar under the drawing holds a few everyday options. The tools are the app's own: everything you can do in the classic layout works here too, and your drawing, your menu style and your keys stay as they are.

Pick it

  1. Open Settings (the gear, or ⌘,Ctrl+,).
  2. Choose the Global tab, then go to Layout › Workspace.
  3. Choose Toolbox and info box.

The layout changes at once. The choice is one for every app in this browser: each app opens in it from then on, and it is in place before the page draws, so you never see the classic layout first.

What is where

  • Toolbar: the app's own toolbar stays at the top of the drawing area, with its menus.
  • Info box: under the toolbar. While a tool runs it shows the tool and what it asks for. When you pick something it shows its main settings (for a wall: its type, thickness, length, location line and height), and you can change them right there: a change there is the same as in Properties, and ⌘ZCtrl+Z takes it back. With nothing picked it says "Nothing selected". Each app adds its own boxes here, such as the current layer or level, or the open document.
  • Toolbox: the column on the left, the app's tools in groups. Click a group's name to fold it or open it again. The tool that is running is lit.
  • My tools: the first group of the toolbox, eight empty slots for the tools you use most. Click an empty slot to choose any tool or command of the app; or right-click a tool in the toolbox and choose Add to My tools; or drag a tool onto a slot. Right-click a slot to change it or empty it. Your slots are kept for each app in this browser.
  • Navigator: the right panel. The app's project browser is on top (plans, sections, elevations, 3D views, schedules, sheets, as the app has them): click one to open it. Under it, Properties and a tab with the right panel's other contents.
  • View tabs: a tab for every view of the open file (a sheet, a plan, a scene…), over the drawing.
  • Quick bar: under the drawing, the view settings and everyday options the app has, such as the scale, the detail level, the view range, fit, plan, split or 3D, snaps and units.
  • Edit palette: click something in the drawing and a small palette comes by the pointer with the app's edit commands for it, such as move, copy, rotate, mirror, duplicate or delete, and Properties. EscEsc, the mouse wheel, another click or its close button put it away.

A tool that can't run right now is greyed, and its tooltip says why. Click it, or press ReturnEnter on it, to read the reason in a box.

EscEsc ends the running tool first, as in the classic layout, and every shortcut and ⌃⇧FCtrl+Shift+F (screen modes) work as before.

Give the toolbox its own window

The Move the toolbox button at the top of the toolbox has Move to a new window: the toolbox opens in a narrow window of its own that you can put beside the app or on a second monitor. Keys pressed there reach the app. Put the toolbox back, or closing that window, brings it home.

The toolbar settings apply to the toolbox too: Settings › Global › Toolbar › Icons and labels, Icons only or Labels only, and Show group names (File, Draw, …).

Your panels stay yours

The left and right panels keep everything described in Arrange the panels: dock, float, pin, hide, tabs, Move to a new window and Reset layout.

Go back to the classic layout

Open Settings › Global › Layout › Workspace and choose CadCraft classic. Every toolbar, tab and panel goes back where it was.

To try another arrangement, see the ribbon and project browser layout.
