Tutorials TakeoffCraft help Getting started
What's new in 0.3
A 3D check view stands the open sheet's walls, slabs and counts up on the drawing, and the side panels can now move to another side or a second monitor.
Written for TakeoffCraft 0.3. The same help is inside the app: press F1.
This is what changed in TakeoffCraft 0.3, compared with 0.2, the version Try ran before. There are two new things: a 3D check of the sheet on screen, and panels you can move. Measuring, items, assemblies, quantities and the exports work as they did in 0.2.
New
- 3D check view. Choose 3D on the bar under the sheet, or press 33, and the takeoff of that sheet stands up on the drawing in each item's color. A missing wall, a doubled slab or a stray count shows at a glance. See Check the takeoff in 3D.
- A linear run whose item has a Height becomes a wall of that height. An area whose item has a Depth becomes a slab with its cut-outs open. An area with no depth shows as a thin plate, a run with no height as a line on the sheet, and each count as a small post.
- The 3D bar has Iso, Top, Front, Back, Left, Right, Bottom, Perspective, Zoom extents (FF or WW), Sheet to show or hide the drawing on the ground, and Back to the sheet.
- Orbit, pan and zoom with the mouse, a trackpad or touch, as in the other CadCraft apps. See Keyboard and mouse.
- Click a wall, slab, plate or post to select its mark, exactly as on the sheet. The status bar gives its length and height, or its area, depth and cubic yards. fn DeleteDelete, ⌘ZCtrl+Z and EscEsc work as on the sheet.
- View cube. In the 3D view a cube at the top right turns with the view. Click a face, edge or corner to look from there, drag it to orbit, drag its compass ring to turn, and use the house button to go back to Iso.
- Corner indicator setting. In Settings, on the TakeoffCraft tab, Corner indicator chooses View cube, Axis icon or None for the 3D view. See Settings.
- Movable panels. The Sheets and Items panels each have a grip at the top with the panel's name and a ⋯ button. Drag a panel to dock it on the left, the right or the bottom, or drop it over the sheet to float it. See Arrange the panels and use a second monitor.
- A second monitor. Move all panels to a new window in a panel's ⋯ menu, or Move panels to a new window in Settings, puts the panels in their own window to drag onto another screen. Reset layout puts every panel back.
Improved
- The 3D view keeps up with the takeoff: change an item's height or depth, or add and delete marks, and it updates at once. Change sheets and it follows.
- The numbers do not change in 3D. A wall's area is its exact length times its height, and a slab's volume is its net area times its depth, the same values as in Quantities.
- The 3D view and three.js load only the first time you open it, so starting TakeoffCraft is no slower.
- Typing in the item and mark fields works when the panels are in their own window, and keys you press there, other than typing in a box, still reach the sheet.
Files and compatibility
- The takeoff file and every export are unchanged. A takeoff saved in 0.3 opens in 0.2, and the other way round.
- Heights and depths were already part of items in 0.2, so older takeoffs show in 3D as soon as their sheets have a scale.
- The corner indicator and the panel layout are settings of this browser, not part of the takeoff.
- The 3D view needs WebGL. If the browser cannot start it, the status bar says so and the flat sheet keeps working.
Known gaps
- The sheet needs a scale before it can show in 3D, since heights need real feet.
- One sheet at a time: sheets are not stacked as floors.
- You cannot draw or edit marks in 3D. Choosing a drawing tool, Paste or Duplicate goes back to the flat sheet.
- Walls are thin strips from the floor up, with no thickness, openings or base height. Count posts are all one size.
- The 3D view cannot be exported.
- The Quantities table does not move; only the two side panels do. There is one panels window, and dialogs still open in the main window.
- More is listed in What is not built yet.
