What's new in 0.3

A view cube in the 3D view with a corner indicator setting, and side panels you can move to another side or a second monitor.

Written for DetailCraft 0.3. The same help is inside the app: press F1.

This is what changed in DetailCraft 0.3, compared with 0.2, the version Try ran before. It is a small release about getting around: a view cube in the 3D view, and panels you can move. Modeling, connections, marks, rebar, drawings and every export work as they did in 0.2.

New

  • View cube. In 3D, a cube at the top right, under the view bar, turns with the model and shows which way you are looking. See The view cube.
  • Click one of its 26 places, 6 faces, 12 edges or 8 corners, to look from there. The view keeps the same middle and zoom.
  • Drag the cube to orbit. Drag the compass ring under it to turn the model about the vertical axis, or click N, E, S or W to look from that side.
  • When you look straight at a face, triangles bring the next face round and curved arrows turn the picture a quarter turn.
  • The house button goes back to the starting three-quarter view with the whole model fitted.
  • The cube works from the keyboard: TabTab to it, choose with the arrow keys, then press ReturnEnter. Keys pressed on the cube do not start DetailCraft tools.
  • Corner indicator setting. In Settings, on the DetailCraft tab, Corner indicator chooses View cube, Axis icon (a small X, Y, Z marker at the bottom left) or None. See DetailCraft settings.
  • Movable panels. The Model panel on the left and the Properties panel on the right each have a grip at the top with the panel's name and a ⋯ button. Drag a panel to dock it on the left, the right or the bottom, or drop it over the model to float it. See Arrange the panels and use a second monitor.
  • A second monitor. Move all panels to a new window in a panel's ⋯ menu, or Move panels to a new window in Settings, puts the panels in their own window to drag onto another screen. Reset layout puts every panel back.

Improved

  • Typing in the Model and Properties panels keeps working when they are in their own window: a redraw does not overwrite the field you are typing in.
  • Keys you press in the panels window, other than typing in a box, still reach the model. See Keyboard and mouse.
  • The view cube, the axis icon and the panels follow the theme.

Files and compatibility

  • Nothing changed in the files. A .detailcraft.json model saved in 0.3 opens in 0.2, and the other way round. IFC, NC, PDF and CSV exports are the same as in 0.2.
  • The corner indicator and the panel layout are settings of this browser, not part of the model. See Open, save and export files.

Known gaps

  • The view cube is in 3D only. Plan and Elevation already look straight at the model and show no corner indicator.
  • A face view from the cube is still a 3D view: nothing is cut away, unlike Plan and Elevation.
  • The reports at the bottom (Problems, Bill of materials, Bending schedule) do not move; only the two side panels do.
  • There is one panels window, and dialogs such as the shop drawing preview still open in the main window.
  • A floating panel resizes by its corner with a mouse only. On a touch screen, use the ⋯ menu to dock it.
  • More is listed in What is not built yet.
