Export a model for other programs

Choose the right export for rendering, the web, 3D printing, BIM and BimCraft, and check what each one keeps.

Written for ModelCraft 0.3. The same help is inside the app: press F1.

Export makes a copy of the model in another format. Keep your .modelcraft file too: it is the only file that keeps everything, and the only one ModelCraft opens directly.

Export

  1. Save first (⌘SCtrl+S), so your working file is safe.
  2. Click Export in the File group.
  3. Choose the format. The browser downloads it, named like the model.

The whole model is exported. To export one part, save, erase the rest, export, then undo or reopen.

Which format

You want toChooseNotes
Open it in another 3D modelerCollada (.dae)Keeps groups, nested groups, components (shared, not copied), names and colors. Z up, meters.
Render it, or use it in a visualization programOBJ (.obj) or glTF binary (.glb)OBJ is the most widely read; it writes each group placement as a separate object, but has no colors and no shared components. glTF keeps components and colors.
Put it on the web, in a game engine or in ARglTF binary (.glb)One file with everything in it.
Print it in 3DSTL for printing (.stl, millimeters)Written in millimeters, the unit printer software expects. Export closed solids.
Open it in BimCraft or another BIM programIFC for BimCraft (.ifc)Each top-level group or component becomes one building element.

The status bar confirms each export, for example "Exported House.stl (millimeters)." or "Exported House.dae (Collada 1.4.1, Z up, meters; components stay shared)."

Before you export

  • Group your objects. Collada, glTF and IFC keep groups and components as separate objects. Loose geometry goes out as one lump; in IFC it becomes one element called "Loose geometry".
  • Name them. Group and component names go into Collada and IFC, so a wall called "North wall" arrives as "North wall".
  • Check face direction. Faces showing blue-grey on the outside will point inward in the export. Fix them with Reverse face (see Erase and clean up).
  • For printing, make the parts closed solids: select each group and check that Entity info says "Solid: Yes". Then scale the model to the printed size, or scale it in the printer software.

Send a model to BimCraft

  1. Make each building part a group or component and name it.
  2. Choose Export, then IFC for BimCraft (.ifc).
  3. Open the downloaded .ifc file in BimCraft.

There is no direct link between the two apps yet. The IFC has one storey, and every element is a generic building element proxy with no type or properties: it carries shape and name only. Closed groups become solid shapes; open ones become surfaces.

Lines without faces

Edges that are not part of any face (guide-like lines, an imported site plan) go into OBJ and Collada as lines. glTF and STL have no place for them and leave them out. Guides and scenes are not exported to any format.
